Like with my other tools, the main reason I switched from Black & Decker to Makita was the frustrating battery situation with Black & Decker. Their tools are fine for home use, but finding reliable batteries has become too much of a hassle. With Makita, battery availability—both OEM and knockoff—has been much better, which was a big factor in my decision.
As for the Makita reciprocating saw itself, it definitely feels sturdier and seems to have more power compared to my old Black & Decker. There’s a noticeable difference in build quality; the Makita feels durable and solid in hand. I’ve dropped it on the grass a few times, and it has that tough, well-built feel like it can take a beating and keep going.
I didn’t use the blade that came with it, as I already had other reciprocating saw blades, so I can’t really comment on the stock blade quality. But with the right blade, it handles yard work and soft metals just fine.
Overall, I’m glad I made the switch, but I wouldn’t say it blows the Black & Decker away when it comes to light tasks like yard work or cutting soft metals. The Black & Decker still got the job done, but with the better battery options and the Makita’s added durability and power, I’m happy I upgraded.

This Makita is a beast, with the power it has there are no issues with cutting through things. As of writing this I have only used it cutting branches and thick body succulents with ease. The tool has a great hefty weight to it, may not be a good tool for you if you need something light or one hand. Easy to use.

I had wanted a reciprocating saw for some time. It seemed right, so I made the purchase. The saw performs well. I have used it for both construction and tree pruning. It is heavy enough that it requires two-handed operation. I purchased various blades; it performs well with the correct blade for the target.
I originally thought a package deal would be the way to go and had it in my cart. I decided to investigate and found the package was actually about $10 more than buying the items separately – saw, blades, batteries, and bag. I bought them all separately.

Love, love, love the long reciprocation travel on this saw. Zips right through project cuts in less time with less effort than my shorter stroke saw. Well built, sturdy, solid. It is heavier than my other Makita but performs better with the long stroke!! Only improvement I would like to see is a second trigger on the top for tight spot, one handed use!
