I like the innovation to pouch cell batteries. These are not alot smaller then the standard 5ah batteries, not as tall but bigger base. for some tools its quite nice because the battery makes a nice foot to stand tools.
It has more punch the the standard 5ah batteries. Overall pretty good.
The one thing to note though it that these batteries are not tolerant to off brand tools. I have a none dewalt glue gun and these batteries will turn themselves off after short use, but will function normally when you put it into a normal dewalt tool, so they have some additional protection in them. something to note.

So I wasn’t sure about the worth of these powerstack batteries until I used them, they supercharge all my DeWalt tools and last forever it seems, so apparently these are a little bigger on the nose of the battery so if your looking for alim buy the 1.7ah instead but you won’t be disappointed in power or longevity with these, also I saw other reviews about them coming in bags or being out of date, mine were dated 2024 and came in an official DeWalt box together

Simply put, this is a great battery. I only have two gripes with it, but it has performed well in every 20v application I have put it through. I tried to upload as many photos as I could to give you a better sense of the size including a comparison between the 1.7ah Powerstack and 5ah XR battery it replaces. Even threw in the beefy 15ah XR for good measure. These photos should also give you a better idea as to what it looks like on several tools.

    Pros:
    – More runtime: Besides the FlexVolt batteries, I’ve noticed a good difference in runtime between the 5ah Powerstack and 5ah XR battery.

    – More consistent power: There is definitely more consistent power output in this battery (1.7ah included) than all the other XR batteries. This rivals the 12ah Flexvolt FlexVolt in terms of power consistency. That is impressive. It is most noticeable when I’m using tools like the cordless heat gun.

    – Rubber base: Just like the 1.7ah Powerstack, the 5ah has the grippy rubber base screwed on the bottom. I don’t know why DeWALT refuses to do this on other batteries besides the Powerstack line, because it reduces the chance of marring whatever surface you place it on. Pretty nice.

    – Larger size: Some people are opposed to this, but I see it as a benefit. Because the base of the battery is wide, it makes whatever tool it’s mounted too, harder to and less likely to get knocked over. That’s a problem the 1.7ah has (in my experience). Last thing I want is to knock my drill over and damage flooring or fall off a ladder. Will the overall increase in size restrict where I can fit my tool? Yes, 100%. However, it is very rare I run into this problem, and if I ever do, I can just slap in the 1.7ah and I’m good to go. Both batteries compliment each other nicely and have their uses.

    Cons:
    – Weight: This battery is HEFTY for a 5ah. Because of how densely the power cells are packed inside, this thing weighs a lot more than I was expecting. I think this in part to how much I got used to the weight of the 1.7ah and figured the 5ah wouldn’t be too off. But it is easily 3x heavier than the 1.7ah and 1.5x heavier than the 5ah XR.

    – Cost: Obviously, this was going to come up. As you can tell by the price (at least at the time of writing this review) these puppies cost some serious bookoo bucks. ~$210 – $220 for 1 and ~$320 – $350 for the 2-pack. That cost is insane for 5ah batteries and is more in the FlexVolt price range. As a comparison, I waited for Black Friday and got 2, 15ah FlexVolt batteries for $500 on ACME Tools. Pretty crazy these can cost almost as much as a 15ah if you’re patient. For myself and my business, I can afford it and the time saved due to the power output is worth the longterm cost, so this purchase made sense to me. Time is money. But the group of people this applies to may be a little niche and not worth the cost, especially since you can easily get 2, 5ah XR batteries for $150. At the end of the day, to each their own, what makes sense to you, may not make sense to others.

Would I recommend this battery? To very few people. Is it a great battery? Absolutely.

  6. Tom Heath

Battery has loads of power at 5Ah. I really like its low profile, particularly when using it on the Dewalt power ratchet. I do have to note, the picture of the item shows these to be “XR” batteries but the ones sent to me do not say “XR” anywhere on them, so what you receive is not the same as what you see on the product page, they do look different. I’m not sure if the performance or quality will be impacted by this or not.

  7. Amazon Customer

These new batteries work great and last much longer even at stress. I used my saw and impact all day and didn’t have to change the batteries once to recharge.

  8. Brandon

Nice batteries, lighter weight and size, seem to hold up well

  9. Isaac Ruiz González

These batteries are very durable and last a long time. They might seem a little heavy but you get used to it very quickly. Not only do last longer than most other brand’s versions they have a serious kick for when you need that extra bit of juice to get job done. I would 100% recommend these. One thing I will add is that take a very long time to charge if you don’t have a rapid charger.

  10. Iceman Jazz

I like the way these ran when new they made my 6 1/2″ trim saw run like a big dog. But from the first day, I noticed one battery seemed to run out of juice quicker than the other. I put a mark on it to double check, and when a battery was performing poorly, it was always the marked one.

Over the next few weeks though, the other kept running worse. They cut out, often will never charge fully, etc. I have had them just over a month now, so Amazon will not take them back, and the original seller (Electronics Club) will not warranty them, they claim it is Amazon’s responsibility.

Awesome batteries if you don’t get a bad pair, and if you get them from a legit seller.

Side note, the 5ah Powerstack is pretty big, it doesn’t fit a 1/4 impact with the belt clip on it. Works great for a trim saw. They don’t last any longer than other 5ah batteries, but seem to make some tools run harder.

  11. David R. Bridge

I like these better because they are compact and powerful without going bigger in size.

  12. JP

I love everything Dewalt and these batteries were a great price and they work perfectly. That’s some batteries that were about 10 or 12 years old needing replacement and these fit perfect. What I love is there not too big and too heavy

  13. D. Brazil

Good price for these batteries and they did appear to be genuine dewalt batteries. Charged fine, discharge fine, and hold a charge when not in use.

We used these as replacement/supplemental batteries for our lawn mower and can almost last long enough for us to cut our yard (big factors include grass height and temperature). The stock battery that came in our lawn mower was 2x 10ah dewalt batteries and these new 5ah batteries last just as long.
